Professional Players: Dave “Devilfish” Ulliott

Dave Ulliott "The Devilfish", presented by thehomeofpoker.co.uk

The best nickname in poker? Well certainly one of the most instantly recognisable, always immaculately dressed in his suit with his trademark rose tinted sunglasses half way down his nose. Why "The Devilfish"?

Well allegedly The Devilfish earned his nickname during the very first tournament he ever played in Vegas in January, 1997 against Men "The Master" Nguyen. With everyone shouting, "Go on The Master," Dave's mate yelled, "go on The Devilfish," a name attached to Dave by Stevie Young in Birmingham. The next day the headlines read "Devilfish devours the Master" and the name has stuck thereafter.

The Devilfish first came to fame via a TV documentary on British TV, quickly followed by victory in the first series of Late Night Poker also in the UK, and from then on the Devilfish has gone from strength to strength, although to be fair, he already had his first, and so far only World Series of Poker bracelet under his belt from 1997 when he won the Pot Limit Hold 'Em event that year, and been unfortunate to finish runner-up four times in a WSOP event since that time. He has however made his mark on The World Poker Tour, winning the $10,000 World Poker Open at Tunica in January 2003, and making some other on screen appearances in other near misses.

Brought up in Hull where he still lives today, The Devlfish is probably the biggest success story in UK poker, being one of the first to sign a lucrative deal with an online poker room, in his case Ultimatebet.com, where he's joined by Phil Hellmuth, Annie Duke and Antonio Esfandiari.
