Books about Poker

The Home of Poker Books section will help you find the right poker books to read from the hundreds out there. Whether it be beginners or experienced poker players, start with our recommended poker books and branch out thereafter. If there's a book you think we should be recommending let us know, and if you think we're wrong, why not tell us in our poker forum. We will not make a recommendation on any poker literature without having personally read the book ourselves.

Internet Texas Hold 'Em - Winning Strategies from an Internet Pro - Matthew Hilger

An excellent beginners book, our top choice, and probably the first to specifically target internet poker play, and the differences that this brings. Matthew was there at the birth of online poker, playing right from the early days of Paradise poker, at some of the highest limits available. There are excellent starting hand charts, that will shore up the play of new poker players prone to playing too many hands.

Where the book falls down slightly is on less than full analysis of post flop play, and a tendecy to weak tight, where not holding at least top pair would see Matthew folding in most situations. To be fair, a lot of Matthews writing is from experience of playing high limits, and in todays low limit, any two cards are good mentality games, more aggression is often called for, so the examples are not as relevant as they may have been when the hands examined were played. this is even true of higher limits today, where some very weak play can also be found.

That being said, Hilger has been there and done it, so his results speak for themselves.

The book is also exclusively Limit Hold 'Em play, but this is no bad thing as we would certainly suggest that all new players cut their teeth on Limit play before venturing into the dangerous waters of Pot Limit or No Limit games.

Killer Poker Online: Crushing the Internet Game - John Vorhaus

Perhaps this should be the first book you read if online poker is going to be your thing, because this is more of a "how to" book than a poker playing strategy book. I have to say I expected more from a big name who is actually associated with Ultimatebet Online Poker room. It does fill in broad concepts such as Online Tells, Winning Tactics or Online Pitfalls, but for the most part it is full of generalisms about online poker play.

Probably very useful if you've never played online before but I found it very basic.

Maybe the information is important and I just take it for granted, but chapters on how to avoid the boredom factor etc, just seem to obvious to this reviewer.

Good for total beginners, but for more experienced poker players, I doubt that they will gain much from this book.

Small Stakes Hold 'em: Winning Big with Expert Play- Ed Miller, David Sklansky, Mason Malmuth

This is a must have for low limit (or any limit) online players. Where Hilger stops this book carries on and fills in the blanks and takes your game to a new level, but beware, this is not for the new player, you should already have the basics grasped before moving onto the concepts here. In many cases the advice may actually contradict the advise given by Hilger, but both are probably right, because a new player would certainly be getting into trouble if following this book to the letter.

Understanding position, and what the other players are doing is given far more emphasis from Miller, whereas Hilger almost exclusively is playing the cards and the odds. If anything, the advice given by Miller transfers very well to No Limit and Pot Limit games, where outright aggression is often paid off far more than in limit play where players will often call down as "it's only one more bet".

Post flop play is also extensively covered, and as this is the area of the game where more money is won and lost, it is a poker field that needs extensive narration, Miller doesn't disappoint, with chapters and sections devoted to how to play specific cards in a variety of situations.

Arguably the best book on the market for online players.

Pot-Limit & No-Limit Poker - Stewart Reuben & Bob Ciaffone

An excellent read from two very experienced professionals from either side of the pond. For those wanting to move from limit to big bet poker this book is a must, as it explains the different poker concepts involved concisely and clearly, and also covers a multitude of poker games, not just the standard Texas Hold 'Em fare that every other poker book seems to cover.

Listed here are or course tips for Texas Hold'Em, plus Omaha, Omaha Hi-Lo, Seven Card Stud, and Seven Card Stud Hi-Lo, Lowball and London Lowball. There is also a tournament section for those who dont want to stick to the grind of cash games.

Every section on each individual poker game is followed by a hand quiz to check your understanding of the concepts explained in the previous chapter.

The book even closes with chapters covering Poker History, House Charges, Etiquette, Cheating, Probability Concepts and Percentage Tables, and a list of Poker Personalities.

Extensive it is!

A must buy for those looking to play Pot-Limit Poker and No-Limit Poker variations.

No-Limit Texas Hold'Em: The New Player's Guide to Winning Poker's Biggest Game - Brad Daugherty & Tom McEvoy

For those who don't know, both of these players have won the big one, the World Series of Poker Championship event, Daugherty in 1991 when he became the first poker player to win $1 million in a single event, and McEvoy in 1983.

This is an extensive analysis of all areas of No Limit Texas Hold Em and adds extra depth to the likes of the Reuben/Ciaffone book, by concentrating solely on this version of poker in this book.

Everything is covered, from Chapter one where they give a beginners crash course to No-Limit Hold 'Em, then to part two where advice is given on the shift from limit to No Limit (this is after all targetted and written by Americans).

Bluffing is of course covered, and Chapter eight covers how to play the top 17 starting hands specifically, how much to bet (especially important for Limit Poker converts who often seem to think a minimum raise is okay), and moving through to include Online Poker in both cash game and tournament format.

An excellent book all round, but from two former World Champions you would expect it to be.
