Location & Accessibility (max 4/5)
The Wynn is well down the strip, past Treasure Island and Venetian, it’s another one requiring a couple of up and overs via the crosswalk bridges, but once there it’s something special, with it’s impressive black exterior, it cuts an imposing and eerie prescence over the strip.
Card Room & Casino Ambiance (4/5)
The Wynn Poker Room is tucked away round the back of the casino, beside the Ferrari showroom (seriously). And it’s nice that it’s not just stuck there beside a load of noisy slot machines, with only passing shoppers to look in on the games. Being only open on the one side, it’s a much cosier atmosphere, unfortunately it suffers by trying too hard to emulate The Bellagio, because it makes the same mistakes, trying to squeeze too many tables into too small a space, added to the dark red/burgundy colour scheme, and it just doesn’t feel inviting. The casino however is tremendous, and has got to be the plushest in Vegas.
Card Room Staff (9/10)
As you’ll shortly see in the next section, I really didn’t pay too much attention to the games during my short spell here, but the dealers were efficient in the main, and the card room supervisor/manager had the tables filling quickly, maybe too quickly as I missed a seat in a different table because I couldn’t get my hand over and chips moved before another player had taken my seat.
Waiting Staff (5/5)
Tremendous service, but more importantly the girls are not just efficient, but absolutely stunning. I wasn’t the only one who complained of not being able to concentrate on the game due to the view. Sexist? Yes, but true nonetheless, the girls are the perfect antidote to the Caesers serving wenches.
Level of Play (5/10) [10 being good]
While I stayed little more than 90 minutes in the Wynn, and a profitable session it proved to be largely due to a full house on the first hand at the table against a nut flush, because thereafter it was tight as a drum, with numerous chops in the $2/$5 NL game, it was one I had to leave for more profitable pastures.
Tournament Selection (8/10)
A sensible fee taken from the tournies, which will be more like what internet and UK based poker players are used to paying. Good structure will make these worth playing, if a little on the expensive side if you’re playing every day. They make a nice mid-range between Caesers daily tournies and the $1000 buy-ins at Bellagio. Could do with something for the guys playing in the $1/$3 game to step onto though would be the only criticism
Cash Game Selection (4/5)
The biggest problem with the Wynn, is the stupid $1/$3NL game, with $3 chips, you get stacks of $60, and the game just feels strange with all those odd chips on the table, and working out the pot and other player’s stacks actually requires some thought rather than just a glance at the pot. Come on Wynn, whose idea was this anomaly? That being said there is good selection, with most of the tables filled on my visit, so you’ll always get a game
Total: 39/50
The Wynn is a beautiful casino with even more beautiful waitresses, and good game selection, but having said that, the games are too tight, and there’s no reason to play in tight games while you’re in Vegas, so come and have a look, but don’t plan on playing here too much.
