Location & Accessability (max 4/5)
Slightly off centre strip, but directly across from New York New York, and Excalibur, it’s a bit of a walk if your in one of the better located hotels, but with all that free beer, it’s maybe no bad thing to get the exercise.
Card Room & Casino Ambience (4/5)
A great little room stuck near the entrance by the sports book, but away from the main gaming floor, it’s one of the first areas you encounter, and is nicely lit without being too bright, and the black dividing walls between the room and the sportsbook make for a nicely subdued look. It is however a bit noisy with one of the main bars right behind, meaning you are subjected to blaring music at all hours of the day.
Card Room Staff (9/10)
An excellent standard of dealer, quick, efficient and mistake free. I also had the misfortune to have a stack of chips taken from me by another player (accidentally), I didn’t agree with the decision made by the dealer on how much this was when he tried to recreate the other player’s stack as he had just won a large pot. Having called for a camera check, the camera room fully vindicated my claim that this was a full stack and not the $70 that the dealer and other player tried to claim. So a big well done to them, and having used these security cameras in a UK casino, I was aware how much better they were meant to be in Vegas, the fact they could tell this stack, which was actually under my arm at the time is very impressive.
Waiting Staff (4/5)
An excellent service, helped by the fact that the bar from the sportsbook backs directly into the poker room. No excuse for ever being short of a drink from this efficient and friendly bunch.
Level of Play (1/10) [10 being good]
This is rated the weakest opposition in town by the locals, having had such an enormous session at Bellagio, it is difficult for me to agree, but there were certainly an enormous number of weak loose players who would call down with second pair, or top pair weak kicker. I still think that Caesers is the one to beat, but if you cab get the right game at the MGM, you'll be sorted!
Tournament Selection (5/10)
Two decent daily tournaments at good times of the day, although as they take 20% off the top, not really sure that THoP should be advising anyone to play in these. They also run a constant $60 sit’n’go, but again take $100 out of a $600 fund, and also $112 sit’n’gos that they take $120 from. Just a little bit steep in our opinion
Cash Game Selection (5/5)
There was plenty of tables in the room, although midweek, they suffered from a shortage of dealers and sometimes the waiting lists got a little too long. Everything from $1/2 NL to $4/8 Omaha Hi Lo with a half kill was being spread here, with the biggest game being $6/12 Limit, so the real sharks stay away.
Total: 32/50
I really must change my scoring system, again MGM is a must play, but 1/10 for level of play is a positive not a negative, after Bellagio this is probably the place to play, and for those who cant afford the $2/5 minimum of Bellagio, then this is your home from home.
