The Rules of Poker

Before you sit down at the poker table, you’d better be aware of the different rules of all the poker games, and the variation of poker that you are going to play, whether it be Omaha, Texas hold’em or Seven Card Stud.
All poker games have hand rankings based on the various hands we have shown below, and our game rules sections can be accessed from the menu on the left. Simply select the poker game that you prefer, and we’ll explain the rules of the game for you.
In the examples below s = spades, d = diamonds, h = hearts and c = clubs.

Royal Flush
An ace high hand where the cards are in sequence and all of one suit.
Example: 10d, Jd, Qd, Kd, Ad

Straight Flush
Any five cards in sequence of the same suit that is not ace high.
Example: 4d, 5d, 6d, 7d, 8d

Four of a Kind
Four cards that are all of the same rank.
Example: Qc, Qs, Qd, Qh

|
Full House
Three cards of one rank and two cards of another rank. The strength of competing full house hands is determined by the three card part of the full house, therefore a hand with three sixes and two twos would beat a hand of three fives and two aces. The three card hand plays first.
Example: 2c, 2s, 2d, Jh, Jd

Flush
Five cards of the same suit and any rank. When more than one flush is reaches showdown, the one with the highest unique card wins.
Example: 3c, 5c, 8c, 9c, Kc

Straight
Five cards in sequence. When more than one straight is competing, the one with the highest card wins. An ace can be taken as either high or low (but not both high and low in the same hand).
Example: 6c, 7c, 8h, 9s, 10d - suit is irrelevant.

Three of a Kind
Three cards of the same rank.
Example: 4h, 4d, 4s

Two Pair
Any two cards of one rank together with two cards of another rank. When more than one hand has two pairs of the same rank, the hand with the highest card outside the paired cards wins.
Example: 8c, 8d, Ks, Kh
|

|
One Pair
Two cards of the same rank. In case two hands have pairs, the highest pair wins. When more than one hand has a pair of the same rank, the hand with the highest card outside the pair wins.
Example: 9s, 9c
|
|
|
Highest Card
When players have none of the above, the hand with the highest card wins.
